Don’t Be Afraid to Feel Emotion

Do not be ashamed to feel different kinds of emotion. To feel emotion is human. Love, desire, anger, jealousy, disappointment, sadness and fear are only a few of the emotions we experience in life. It is alright to cry.

But, don’t let these emotions cause you to do destructive or irresponsible acts. You can feel an emotion as long as it doesn’t cause you to do sinful behavior. Do not act on emotions that are destructive. Emotions are motivators. Make sure they cause you to do positive actions rather than destructive ones.

If you are in love, work on developing a skill that will impress the person you are courting. If you are jealous, work on obtaining something similar to what causes your jealousy. If you are angry, try talking out your problem with your opponent. If you are sad, try spending time with people you love and appreciate the blessings you have. If you are afraid, be brave and confront your fear or try using a new strategy to open your mind to new possibilities. Sometimes taking what you perceive as a risk will free you from your cage of fear. If you are happy, share your happiness with others.

Do not hold onto negative emotions in your mind for a long time. Clear your mind and re-focus your thoughts on something else. Control your emotions by not thinking constantly about them. If you feel sexual desire for someone inappropriate, re-focus your thoughts and do not act on them.

Let go of emotions that can hurt you. Holding onto negative emotions for a long time is destructive to your physical health and your mental health. Forgive people with whom you are angry. Show compassion to those who do hurtful things. Be brave when you are afraid. People who intimidate are weak and lazy in their hearts and will not keep bullying if they see you are strong. The mean games of the world can only be played if both sides are participating.

Count your blessings if you are sad. It is easy to forget the good things in life, so we must be grateful for them. Never let despair drive you to self-harm. The world is never as dark as you think. There are always people who love you. Talk about your feelings with someone. More people around you are experiencing the same problems than you think or they have been watching you and are aware of your burdens. You are never truly alone.

Competition

Competition can be good. It drives you to better yourself. If keeps you fit. If reminds you that you have to earn the things you want. But, don’t let if drive you to contempt.

Remember, that everyone had basic needs that need to be met. There has to be a way people can share resources in a society. A way that people who can’t compete very well due to illness or other afflictions can obtain the things to be productive members in their society.

Thinking

Feb 10, 2018 Thinking Oppressive, unscrupulous leaders may try to intimidate you into not thinking for yourself and speaking out against unfair practices. They cause bad things to happen to you if you try to stop people from cheating or hurting their neighbors for social gain. People who live in systems like that are cowed into not thinking about how their system is structured and speaking out to try to change it. Frequently, those same people take the goodies that are structured into the system to keep the population from asking questions. Weak people will trade freedoms for entertainment and not insist that they have quality lea...

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother

I just finished the book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua. As a mother, I found it very insightful. While I think Ms. Chua was into extreme parenting, I do think she has a point about expecting the best of our children to show them how much they can achieve. I recommend every parent read this book. Several of her quotes are worth noting: On Teaching: "What Chinese parents understand is that nothing is fun until your good at it. To get good at anything you have to work, and children on their own never want to work, which is why it its crucial to override thier preference." "I am here to prepare them for the world, not be their friend." (I superimposed these two ideas onto what it means to be a teacher when I was at a recent interview for a teaching position.) "Tenacious practice, practice, practice is crucial for excellence; rote repetion is underrated in America." (I think she has a point. I wonder if that strategy plus memorizat...

The Problem Of School Dropouts

I read an article in the Phi Delta Kappan entitled Keeping Youths in School: An International Perspective . This article examines the vocational training strategies other countries use to help reduce the number of school dropouts. American tends to use vocational training as a way to entice unmotivated students into education. Whereas, other countries have a higher regard for vocational training and nationally respected licenses can be obtained in these programs. Employers trust these programs to prepare workers and the programs themselves are constructed to allow people to train for white-color jobs in their field. With its “college for all” mantra, the United States uses VET (career and technical training in the U.S.) mainly to engage unmotivated students and introduce them to various career options. This strategy makes the United States an outlier. In the more successful countries, VET has little to do with engaging unmotivated students, though that is one robust outcome, nor with ...
