The Spiral- Earth Day April 22, 2019

Earth Day  April 22, 2019

The spiral is an important symbol. It depicts both stability and change. We are always moving forward in time yet, the repeating cycles of life never end. As we spiral through time, we can adapt and change.
The spiral is a good symbol for the cyclic passage of time. It represents the cycles of life, the ecosystems and human cultures through time.
It shows the forward movement of existence while emphasizing the cyclic nature of that existence.
A spring coil is a good representation.

A person's faith is represented by a spiral or coil. The ups and downs of blessings or trials can be seen in the cyclic circular spiral. A person is never trapped in a repeating circle or closed loop because of the linear passage of forward moving time. Even when people suffer, the hardship does not last forever. Each new day represents another step through time and a step closer to the end of the hardship. The forward momentum of time can be a solace while the familiar cycles of life and the surrounding world provide stability.
The cyclic nature of the world does not imply an endless loop. Adaptation and changes help move the cycles forward. People learn from mistakes, new generations seek new ideas and changes happen in the environment that force ecosystems to adapt.
It is important to respect the cyclic qualities of the world but, also remember that each new day brings forward progress. Nothing is forever.

Even our planet moves in a spiral movement through space. The planet's orbit is an approximate circle called an ellipse. But, our solar system orbits the center of our galaxy at the same time. The planet is making tight elliptical orbits around the sun within our solar system. All the while, the planet is moving forward along a larger line of orbit around the galaxy center. To someone looking into our galaxy, our planet will look like a little ball coiling through space.

Circle

April 22, 2017  Earth Day  The Circle: The symbol of the circle has great meaning. It represents recycling, renewal and the spiral cycling of time. History repeats itself. It also represents the regenerative process.  Recycling: We must expect each other to reduce, reuse and recycle.  Tell your story: We must remember that talking about our times of suffering is good for mental health. Telling the story of your personal experience with adversity to empathetic listeners is a personal obligation, because it informs and prepares the listeners for adversity that may come into their own lives. It is equally an obligation for people to listen to someone who needs to tell their story.  Write: Each one of us must write our thoughts and feeling regularly. Journaling helps the mind coalesce ideas into complete thoughts. People are more likely to take action to better their world when they have developed complete ideas from their experiences. Journaling can b...

Thinking

Feb 10, 2018 Thinking Oppressive, unscrupulous leaders may try to intimidate you into not thinking for yourself and speaking out against unfair practices. They cause bad things to happen to you if you try to stop people from cheating or hurting their neighbors for social gain. People who live in systems like that are cowed into not thinking about how their system is structured and speaking out to try to change it. Frequently, those same people take the goodies that are structured into the system to keep the population from asking questions. Weak people will trade freedoms for entertainment and not insist that they have quality lea...

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother

I just finished the book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua. As a mother, I found it very insightful. While I think Ms. Chua was into extreme parenting, I do think she has a point about expecting the best of our children to show them how much they can achieve. I recommend every parent read this book. Several of her quotes are worth noting: On Teaching: "What Chinese parents understand is that nothing is fun until your good at it. To get good at anything you have to work, and children on their own never want to work, which is why it its crucial to override thier preference." "I am here to prepare them for the world, not be their friend." (I superimposed these two ideas onto what it means to be a teacher when I was at a recent interview for a teaching position.) "Tenacious practice, practice, practice is crucial for excellence; rote repetion is underrated in America." (I think she has a point. I wonder if that strategy plus memorizat...
